Day 11 – A School Visit and God’s Blessings

We woke up to no electricity again. Packing was a challenge, done mostly by flashlight and a bit of sunlight peeking through. After breakfast, we began our drive to a Maasai school—one that SCA had the privilege of helping by raising money to build their 4th grade classroom.

On the way, we spotted giraffes up close. They are such fascinating animals, moving gracefully across the landscape. As we drove, the terrain, houses, and roads began to take on more of a country feel.

When we pulled up to the school, the students were lined up outside, joyfully welcoming us with songs. From 4th grade down to the playgroup (the 3-year-olds), they looked so sharp and proud in their uniforms!

We toured the classrooms and learned that 1st grade is their largest class—60 students in one room! We also visited the new 4th grade classroom and spoke with the teacher. They are hopeful about adding 5th grade soon, allowing the students to continue their education there.

After the tour, the students were dismissed back to class, and we had the joy of giving each one Smarties and a pencil engraved with their school’s name. In the preschool class, one little one began crying inconsolably. Mrs. Gradel explained that many of these families don’t have TVs, and some of the children had never seen white people before. It suddenly made sense why so many of them curiously reached out to touch our skin and hair.

Before leaving, we snapped some pictures and discussed the school’s needs with their staff. As we drove away, the children crowded the doors, waving goodbye with huge smiles.

On the way home, we stopped at a huge gift shop—without price tags! It was the kind of place where you had to negotiate for every item. We each filled woven baskets with treasures, and then Ros took over. Watching her negotiate was fascinating—I only wish I could understand the language. She secured amazing prices for us! After paying, the shop workers wrapped our purchases with layers and layers of tape. We laughed and decided that must be where Mrs. Gradel learned her taping skills. 😂

Back on the road, we saw baboons gathered near the roadside, clearly waiting for travelers to toss food their way. Finally, we arrived at Bev and Babu’s, enjoyed a wonderful dinner (with cake!), and began our packing once again. Tomorrow we leave for Ros and Sam’s.

This trip has been such an incredible experience. We have truly felt the blessings of God every step of the way. His protection, love, and presence have been so evident on this journey.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
