Day 9 – Into the Wild: Our First Safari in Masai Mara

We left early this morning and headed to our safari adventure in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

The journey didn’t go quite as planned—we had a flat tire along the way that took some time to repair. While we waited, a group of school children came to check out what was happening. They didn’t speak any English, but that didn’t stop them from engaging with us. We handed out packets of trail mix, and the kids seemed to be happy although they weren’t sure what it was.

A little further along, we stopped at a massive gift shop. It was packed with items of every kind, and the atmosphere was a bit overwhelming. Bargaining was expected, which made us very thankful that Rosalind was there to help us navigate!

As we continued our drive, the wildlife sightings began—monkeys, baboons, gazelles, a zebra, and even a hippo spotted by Abbey. Each animal felt like a preview of what was to come.

When we finally arrived at camp, Masai warriors greeted us with traditional dancing. It was such a warm and unforgettable welcome!

After lunch, we headed out for our first game drive. In just a few hours we saw giraffes, topi, gazelles, two lionesses, and an African buffalo. It was breathtaking to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Dinner was served at 8 p.m., and afterward we gathered around the fire pit. Sam taught us some games, and the night was filled with laughter and fellowship. When it was time for bed, we walked back to our “tents,” where mosquito netting had been carefully tucked over each bed. To our surprise, when we turned down the covers, we found hot water bottles waiting to warm our beds—a small but wonderful touch.

The biggest surprise of all? The electricity shuts off at night! It caught us off guard, but it added to the adventure.

It was an amazing first day in the Mara—full of animals, laughter, and sweet moments of fellowship.

Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.
