Day 13 – Homeward Bound and Heart Reflections

Image
After breakfast, we played a board game that was very competitive but so much fun! We also received beautiful Kenyan dresses, shoes, and bracelets. Of course, we had to try them on—and before long we were singing and laughing until our sides hurt. It was such a joyful way to spend the morning! After dinner, we celebrated a birthday together, adding one more special memory to our trip. Then it was time to finish packing and prepare for our long journey home.  Loading 17 big suitcases plus cary-one and backpacks was quite the fete!  We finally made it through security!! As we boarded the plane, there was a mixture of emotions—thankfulness for all we had experienced, sadness at leaving new friends behind, and excitement to be reunited with family and loved ones at home. Final Reflection Looking back on these past days, our hearts are full. We came to Kenya hoping to bless others, but we leave having been profoundly blessed ourselves. We saw God’s hand at work in every moment—t...

Day 12 – A Joyful Celebration

Image
We started our day off by waiting on the van to get jumped. Something we’ve learned is that 10 minutes in Kenya is not quite the same as it is for us. 😂 Once the van was running, we went grocery shopping. Each of us wanted certain items to bring home—the sugar here is amazing, and so is the coffee! After our grocery run, we headed to the Blessed Link Center. We were welcomed with dancing and singing, as today was a celebration! Before we shared about our trip, each of us had to dance to the music around the whole group. The common themes that flowed through all of our hearts were how incredibly welcoming everyone has been and how prayer is woven into everything. Before we left and when we returned, we prayed together. We celebrated with cake and were even given gifts. As we said our goodbyes, we left something behind—our handprints and signatures on the wall. It was such a special and meaningful moment! From there, we loaded the van and headed to Ros and Sam’s house. When we ar...

Day 11 – A School Visit and God’s Blessings

Image
We woke up to no electricity again. Packing was a challenge, done mostly by flashlight and a bit of sunlight peeking through. After breakfast, we began our drive to a Maasai school—one that SCA had the privilege of helping by raising money to build their 4th grade classroom. On the way, we spotted giraffes up close. They are such fascinating animals, moving gracefully across the landscape. As we drove, the terrain, houses, and roads began to take on more of a country feel. When we pulled up to the school, the students were lined up outside, joyfully welcoming us with songs. From 4th grade down to the playgroup (the 3-year-olds), they looked so sharp and proud in their uniforms! We toured the classrooms and learned that 1st grade is their largest class—60 students in one room! We also visited the new 4th grade classroom and spoke with the teacher. They are hopeful about adding 5th grade soon, allowing the students to continue their education there. After the tour, the stud...

Day 10 – Wild Encounters and Cultural Wonders

Image
Today was a long safari day. We started with breakfast and then began our drive. It was amazing to see all the animals out in the wild! We saw lots of mamas with their babies. One of the highlights was seeing the lionesses eating a freshly killed animal! Our picnic lunch was wonderful, though we had some unexpected company—giant storks circling around and trying to steal our food. We learned that the “sack” hanging from their neck shows who the leader is; the dominant bird gets first choice! The adventure continued with many more animal sightings. At the Mara River, we spotted multiple hippos and a couple of crocodiles—one of them was huge! We also stood at the trails where the wildebeests cross during their great migration. Another highlight was seeing the border between Kenya and Tanzania—it was just a simple rock with no fence at all. After returning to camp and resting, we stepped outside to watch the hippos. At night they roam freely across the grounds, and on their se...

Day 9 – Into the Wild: Our First Safari in Masai Mara

Image
We left early this morning and headed to our safari adventure in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The journey didn’t go quite as planned—we had a flat tire along the way that took some time to repair. While we waited, a group of school children came to check out what was happening. They didn’t speak any English, but that didn’t stop them from engaging with us. We handed out packets of trail mix, and the kids seemed to be happy although they weren’t sure what it was. A little further along, we stopped at a massive gift shop. It was packed with items of every kind, and the atmosphere was a bit overwhelming. Bargaining was expected, which made us very thankful that Rosalind was there to help us navigate! As we continued our drive, the wildlife sightings began—monkeys, baboons, gazelles, a zebra, and even a hippo spotted by Abbey. Each animal felt like a preview of what was to come. When we finally arrived at camp, Masai warriors greeted us with traditional dancing. It was su...
